Yes, it's Halloween, and you've probably noticed: Many TV and cable channels have been showing lots of horror movies. It goes with the spooky season! We'll leave the subject of insurance long enough to ponder: What are the ten best horror movies? It's a subjective question, yet the American Film Institute (AFI), via www.buzzpirates.com, came up with this list. How many of these skin-crawling screamfests have you seen?
10. Saw. Not only is this hack-'em-up disturbing, but when a film generates numerous sequels, you know it made an impression on a large audience!
9. The Ring. Not only is this a very scary film, it more or less brought horror movies back into the mainstream of cinema. A videotape, a phone call, and a scared Naomi Watts. . .what more do you need?
8. Rosemary's Baby. It's good to see one of the all-time classic horror yarns make the list. Roman Polanski may be a scoundrel, but this bone-chilling tale with Mia Farrow giving birth to a very unwelcome monster just might be his finest work.
7. Jaws. This is as fine a heart-pounding thriller as they come. Years after this Steven Spielberg classic made its theatrical run, countless people still refused to swim in the ocean!
6. Poltergeist. Perhaps the best haunted house movie ever. Plus this film may be solely responsible for ruining the idea that clowns are a happy thing.
5. The Exorcist. Released in 1973, this film literally had people in audiences fainting and being carried out of theaters. A movie about demonic possession is universally scary--and who can forget the famous Linda Blair head spin!
4. Halloween. This film made Jamie Lee Curtis the undisputed "scream queen" of Hollywood. Plus see Number 10 above. Any movie that spawns numerous sequels has something going for it.
3. Pyscho. No list is complete without this Alfred Hitchcock classic. Who can forget the unforgettable shower scene? This thriller may very well be the granddaddy of the horror genre.
2. Alien. In space, no one can hear you scream. This Ridley Scott classic combines horror with science fiction and topnotch cinematography; plus it made Sigourney Weaver an international star.
1. The Shining. How can you make a story written by horror mastermind Stephen King any better? Simple. . .have it star Jack Nicholson! A deserted hotel in the middle of nowhere, and a frozen hedge maze, makes The Shining earn the #1 ranking of this list.
