As a business owner, you're always looking to trim expenses. And your insurance company has just sent you the bill for your commercial general liability policy (CGL); you can't stop staring at it on your desk. The premium is daunting; that money could sure be put to good use elsewhere--either new equipment, or give your overworked manager a well-deserved raise. After all, you are the consummate business owner; no one is going to be injured by your product or service, and your business isn't going to damage anyone else's property. You're sorely tempted to cancel your policy.
Don't! Here's the plain, honest truth: EVERY business needs liability insurance! Let's look at a few examples. If you have an actual physical location that customers visit, you have a very real exposure from slips and falls. It's a fact, people trip, and when they fall they often are injured, sometimes seriously. Not many businesses could afford to pay for a customer's serious injuries from a fall out of their bottom line; that's when liability insurance comes in very handy!
Run a restaurant? Food poisoning is a huge exposure. If all your customers who ate the smoked ham during the noon buffet get sick--many of them requiring medical attention--your liability policy is essential to step in and protect your business! Own a garage? Unfortunately, employees make mistakes. Let's say the new employee, the one who's distracted because he broke up with his girlfriend the night before, drains the oil from a customer's car, then subsequently forgets to replace the oil. . .and two weeks later, your customer presents you with a $10,000 bill for a new engine block, you'll be glad you can turn to your liability policy for protection!
As you can see, liability insurance is vital! No matter your line of business, from owning a hair salon to running a factory, liability insurance is the difference between staying in business--or closing your doors.
