Yes, it is possible to buy insurance for your car directly online. For years we've all known about the green lizard. And just recently online retailers Walmart and Overstock.com announced they were offering online access to purchase a personal auto policy; Walmart is even making access to purchasing insurance available at their kiosks in some of their stores. To this we have but one single word:
BEWARE!
Insurance is a complicated, multi-layered product. Each policy contains varying liability limits, deductibles, Named Insureds, Uninsured Motorist options, Medical Payments options, exclusions, provisions, and endorsements. From this perspective, does it look like a product one could easily purchase without the assistance of a licensed professional? Not exactly! And is there a lender you're making car payments to? Buying an online policy and failing to include the lender as a Loss Payee is going to go over like a lead balloon!
Here is a terrific analogy. You can go to the store and buy the cheapest generic can of green beans you can find, then take it home and try it. If it turns out you don't like the generic beans as well as the name brand product, you're only out a buck going back to the name brand. But if you go online and purchase the cheapest auto policy you can find that doesn't adequately protect you and your assets--and if you cause an accident causing serious injury to a third party--you could lose everything you own!
Insurance should be purchased with the assistance, guidance, and input of a licensed, trained professional. Buying on price alone is a very risky proposition when it comes to insurance! Many agency websites, including this one, allow you to start the quoting process by filling out our underwriting guidelines and then submitting them directly to us. We'll get back to you to present options for auto coverage best suited to your needs. You never want to learn the hard way that cheap online auto policy you bought fails to protect you like you thought it would!
